I keep hunting for that elusive Oct. 1 1862 first-day on-document usage, with no luck thus far. My earliest document has been Oct. 6, 1862, but courtesy of ebay I'm now 2 days closer.

The check below, dated Oct. 4, 1862, is signed by George Opdyke, then Mayor of New York City. The cut cancel unfortunately goes through the stamp as well as the check, but I figure the stamp itself is of nominal importance.

Even with the cut cancel, it's an attractive piece.

3 more days...

Nothing particularly innovative on my part. 1862 usages on document are fairly scarce, and the farther back you go towards Oct. 1, 1862, the more scarce they are. October usages in particular can command very large premiums.

I just think it would be cool to own a first day of use. I've never seen one in person. They exist, as documented in Mike Mahler's book "A Catalog of United States Revenue-Stamped Documents of the Civil War Era" (American Revenue Association, 1999).
