ebay is a law to itself, especially when you look at special interest (hobby) listings. Stamps is the one we all look at but the same applies on other levels. I have just been discussing with a friend of mine on another forum regarding the price reached for a tatty, incomplete steam engine. We both own several versions of this particular engine and have a good knowledge it so when we agreed that this lot was probably worth less than £50 we were both staggered when it made more than four times that!

The other thing to consider that the buyer is not alone there had to be at least one under bidder prepared to pay almost that amount.

Newbies to the hobby and to ebay can get a bit carried away...

Ralph.

PHILB------Sometimes you don't know the story behind the bid ,so it is hard to follow the logic of why he bid that price . <p> a few years ago I was picking up a lot of work for my contractor business and the work was pileing up ,so I took a weekend off to drive down to St Louis for a stamp show and stamp auction .At that auction was a real fun lot which would keep me interested all summer sorting and adding stamps to my collection .It was the kind of lot that got my head out of all the pressure related to work and would be fun to work on after spenting 12 hours in the sun with a crew of guys . So I bid and won the lot ,how much did I pay it didn't matter a few hundred dollars extra because we were pushing a few hundred thousand dollars of work thru that summer .Well at the time of paying and picking up that lot ,the under bidder had to let me know and everyone else in the area know that I overpaid for the stamp lot .I was in a hurry and just ignored him .

I guess you pay the value you believe what its worth. Some such as my self its the pleasure it will give me in the coming months. sorting, mounting etc etc. I know I buy albums in the summer times place them on the shelve until winter time when work slows to a crawl.... Some time I over pay,,,, some times I get a good buy... but it's not just the value (face value) but the pleasure it gives me too
