SG seems to struggle with the stamps of non-Commonwealth Africa. The last edition of the standard SG catalogue covering Madagascar after independence [SG Part 13] was issued back in 1981.

Not just SG, but Scott has also struggled mightily. For example, while Scott does have a pretty good set of listings for Malagasy Republic past 1993, if you go through the listings you will see it is not rigorously in chronological order. In fact, the listings for the mid-1990s are a somewhat jumbled mess, with the dates jumping around from 1993-1997.

I still recall when I was sorting my stamps, how happy I was to see the year on each stamp, and then do an initial sort according to those dates. Then, as I IDed the catalog numbers, my disappointment to see that the issues for the mid-1990s were scrambled in the catalog listings.

I'd like to thank wt1 for those links, that highlights greatly
our discussion on these stamps.

As to Rileysan, I think the Zebu, Travellers tree
and the Lemur, as the cultural icons of Madagascar.
IIRC Madagascar has the most numerous varieties of Lemur
on the planet.

The gravestone is the curious thing, once viewed never forgotten
we shall have to consult the designer for that one :(
