Queen Victoria may not have been amused at some depictions of her on stamps, such as an early one from Mauritius. "In 1859, Mauritius released a third design, a two pence stamp very crudely engraved by Jules Lapirot, and known as the "Lapirot" issue. The stamp was described as "the greatest libel upon Her late Majesty Queen Victoria that has been ever been perpetrated" and it was nicknamed in France as the tête de singe (monkey head) issue." Poor Bo, the first dog of the U.S. gets a stamp from Tuvalu - and has his nose cut off! Not much to see but a hideous black blob. |

This is another downside of the USPS policy change to allow living persons to be depicted on stamps -- imagine the embarassment it may cause to someone who is portrayed by a less-than-flattering image.
Although, if it turns into a "pay-for-play" system, I'm sure the individuals being depicted will insist on flattering portrayals. |

Hi BeeSee - great stamp - but its not such a flattering depiction of the president either. Although he did get to keep his nose. |

Quote: let's say you'd be disappointed if one of your kids brought them home as their date or really really angry if one your friends set you up on a blind date. I noticed you put he picture of a lion (the Lion from Narnia). I too would be really really angry at my friends if they set me up with a lion...or intrigued...I'm not sure anymore. But I'm pretty sure I wouldn't be happy. |

New Zealand, New South Wales and Queen Victoria was already discussed on this forum. Maybe the (partial?) lack of the eyeball is to blame... Here are some stamps with the young queen And later... here the eye is filled and one from New Zealand |

Marià Fortuny I Marsal (complete name Marià Josep Maria Bernat Fortuny I Marsal, in Spanish: Mariano José María Bernardo Fortuny y Marsal; June 11, 1838 – November 21, 1874), known more simple as Marià Fortuny or Mariano Fortuny, was a Catalan painter. His brief career encompassed both the Romantic fascination with Orientalist themes, and a prescient loosening of brush-stroke and color. Self portrait |

I'll keep all the jokes about that Obama stamp to myself! One possible explanation about the de-nosed dog: perhaps this stamp was on a souvenir sheet? |

Yes Nells, it did originate from a souvenir sheet. When I get hope I will post it. Still, an extremely poor design in putting the nose outside the perforations.
A friend in Tuvalu posted me covers with all the single stamps from the sheet. |

This Yugoslavian postal tax stamp always seems to me like it's a full-grown man posing for the picture. Bags under the eyes, receding hair line .... give him a pistol and a cigar in his mouth and he's fit for a Spike Jones skit. Ryan |
