JHS, that is the Beauty of this hobby. It's always waiting for you when you do find some time and some answers take longer than others. To me it's the research that really tickles my fancy and you never know when you might find the proverbial Ruby in the Mountain of Rocks. You might never find one but the thrill of the hunt make it worthwhile to me.

JHS I get several if not more e mails or phone calls a year from folks with a situation similar to yours...i ask them if they can come to one of our stamp club meetings with their collection...then I will ask 2 or 3 various members of our club to take time and look at the persons collection...its about the fairest way I know...the club members are going to be pretty honest in front of their fellow members....the bad news is..there are very few collectors that like yourself are going to be able to deal with 6 footlockers worth of stamps...we do have a local auction house where collections of stamps are sometimes sold...the bidding can get hot and heavy when half a dozen stamp collectors find out there are stamps to be auctioned...well thats my experience !!

Thanks, Stallzer and Phil; I appreciate your posts.

For now, I'm slowly puttering through them.

One of the footlockers is full of albums of USA first day covers (FDC, right?), commencing 1956 (or 57). Anything in particular I should target/keep my eye out for?

Jim,

Many of us would love to be in your predicament -- having 6 footlockers of unexplored philatelic material to wade through!

With regard to your question on the FDCs, most of the value in the period you have will involve tagging so you'll need a UV lamp to detect them -- probably no hurry on that front.

If you don't have one yet, investing in a Scott Specialized Catalogue of U.S. Stamps and Covers would be quite helpful in allowing you to determine what you have.

Lastly, scrolling through SCF threads, using the forum's search function, and posting your questions can also help you make sense of what you've got.

I think I speak for all when I say we look forward to following your progress.

Thank you for the suggestions, Steve. I'm thinking, "Holy Mackerel...a UV lamp, too?"

What does a 56 year old pair of mammaries have to do with philately?

Fifia, you mean what happened to Mr Dorati ?

Looks like when he was told that his car boot loot was not "worth a pretty sum " as he thought
he then took his marbles stamps and went home.
