Been reading and checking out several members great efforts creating a website to display their goodies. I have built my own sites for my fishing lures but I used a really old version of netscape composer . Simple program add a pic add some text maybe a link or 2 but when I try to use Publisher and newer html editors I get lost in all the pre formed template stuff.
Can fellow members who are doing or have done this recomend some suggestions for easy to use software and possibly a couple simple free hosting sites . I do understand basic HTML code but would prefer not to try and actually write code. Also the hosting sites with a file manager browse option are the easiest to load images and pages.
Hopefully this will help others with 1000's of scans to display their wares.

A few questions for you:

How much information do you want to present other than photos? (value, color, topic, info on the issue, etc.)

How do you want it organized for display? (Do you want them displayed by category, etc.? Each set on its own page? Each stamp on its own page?)

Without putting to much thought I would at least want to go country/ years/ airmails. I am sure I could fumble through with the old software and get things right but my hopes are this thread will help others that maybe consider it to daunting a task. The reality is building the pages is not much of a problem with most software but I know alot consider getting the pages actually uploaded to their own place on the web a headache.
I've used 20m.com for free hosting before where you can create a site and have it hosted at no cost with a name such as "mystamps".20m.com . Unfortunately the free services has pop up ads which can be a pain.

Nitro:

I'm a fan of HTML coding from the old days, but I agree with you, it's just not practical anymore.

If you're purchasing hosting, you can use Content Management Systems (CMS) like WordPress, Drupal, Joomla, etc. Of course, they have their own learning curve, but you're really not uploading files (other than images and media). You log in as "admin" to design and add content. Other users without a login just see your content.

Also, check out Blogspot if you just want a free blogging tool.

nitrolures,

I use http://www.123-reg.co.uk/ . They charge 2.50 British pounds per year for web hosting and 3.00 pounds for hosting + templates. No ads and the site is all yours. I think there is another small fee to register a domain name and that's it more or less.

Hope that helps....

I would second the blogspot.com suggestion. I've actively used this site for the past year, and have been quite impressed.....and it's free.

nitrolures,

I don't know if you have a gmail account or not (its free) but if you do you can build a website in their "sites" section. It's really pretty easy to set up. There are a variety of templates you can use and incorporating images is a snap. There are no ads that pop up nor any other advertising. Plus, you get 100 megs of space for your site. And did I mention that it's all free...

I've always liked to piddle around creating websites and about a month ago started using this to keep an online checklist of my worldwide stamps. I'll include a link below so you can see what it looks like. Again, it is in the piddling stage and not complete by a long shot.
