I find it interesting to see that the Mystic Stamp Company, makers of the popular U.S. Heirloom Stamp Album, apparently had a good business year in 2011, offering its employees a quarter of a million dollars in bonuses this Christmas. It averages out to about $2000 per employee, and they apparently pay it twice a year. I was rather surprised, as I didn't think the stamp collecting business was quite so profitable, but then again, Mystic is one the big players with a hefty portfolio.

For $38.95, their Heirloom album is a great buy. Someone on SCF used the retail sales term "loss leader" a few days ago to describe selling a product at or below cost to get the customer into the store to hopefully buy other stuff. I think that's what Mystic is doing. It sets a great tone for new collectors and they then keep coming back to Mystic.

No, I don't work for Mystic, but I do love my American Heirloom album. They at least get my business for the annual supplements. Overall I find their prices are more expensive for supplies then many other sellers, and I'd never go there for US classics. They do come in handy if you have a "hole" in a series from around 1950 on. On several occasions, when I ordered a used stamp they sent a mint item instead, as they were unable to find a used one. Made a good impression to be dealt with that way. I'm glad they're being so successful.

Have you ever looked at Mystic's stamp prices? They make good ole' H.E. Harris seem like a bargain...

For all their high prices, they must be doing a good business. Who is buying stamps from them? I have the Heirloom album and have bought supplies because I like their shipping charge---very reasonable. And yes I on occasion have bought a stamp or two. It is very convenient to be able to pick a single Scott number from their catalog and get that stamp.

As someone above said, it is convenient to fill a hole or two.

At the prices they charge, no wonder they have plenty of $$ to give out. I do like their catalogue though

I'm a fan of their business model, and the fact that even thru this
very tight economy they have indeed stuck to their advertising and
business promotion model
