I imagine Grandad felt the same way...it was not about the value of the stamps...it was his sanctuary..a place where he felt at home..with grandad gone the stuff is just chattel...am I going to worry about what my household furniture is worth after I am gone ?

I know at least 20 future Grandads and Grandmums,
in this SCF family who are going to be leaving similar treasures.

I wish I had a grandad that could have left me something like this! It prpbably would have taken the rest of my life to go through it! Sadly, I am the oddball and the only one in my family that finds stamp collecting interesting.

I have an uncle who introduced me to stamp collecting. I alway wonder how to hint to him that I would like to buy his collection after he passes on. Since he is in great health, and I would never want to hurt him, I don't mention it. Hopefuly in the long off future his heir will offer it to me before being take for a ride by some dealer!

KM, I am also the only oddball stamp collector and reader among my blood relatives...my wife got curious and came to one of my stamp club meetings about 20 years ago...i think she has surpassed me as a collector..i know collectors who have been GENEROUSLY gifted with stamps..thats fine..but its not the reason we collect..Tony Bennett has to sing..i have to play with little pieces of paper !!

That's quite a room! No empty box went to waste here. I can see where this would be a challenge to a collector to go through it. If it was up to me to assess the collection, I would first see what lies within the Scott Internationals. I've dealt with a couple estates that weren't quite up to this size, but had some similar look to them, lots of cigar boxes, 3 ring binders and the ilk. With some sweat equity thrown in it would be interesting to see what this Grandpa would get for all this. Sad to say the most value could be in the cigar box marked "coins."

LABOR OF LOVE ? ----------I think its a mess and needs to be cleaned up and organized ,how can anyone determine whats there .Most people are confussing bulk with value and that whole room will most likely be packed up and sold thru a auction firm as a junk lot of ten or fifteen large storage boxes with minium value . HERE IS A REAL LABOR OF LOVE ,its my collection ...

I think the appeal with people that it would be a treasure hunt. One would have a pretty good idea just browsing around a little bit. It would be every stamp dealer's dream to see a wall like floortraders of course! However, I have spoke to dealers who have found a 40 odd volume Scott International (Or Scott Specialty) Collection and they were all practically empty.

Phil's stamp room has become show and tell

Here's my Stamp Library
(except for the Beatles compendium hiding in there)
and another cabinet nearby full of stamp magazines.
