Happy new year to all collectors irrespective of 'Hinge'' use. Our Harbour city put on beautiful Fireworks at the foreshore one hour ago, Midnight. Unfortunately not quite as massive as Sydney Harbour's display, 100 miles away, covered live on our National TV.

I must be a Grinch, the Sydney fireworks came in at 7 million dollars I just think the money could have been spent better elsewhere Talk about money up in smoke. I know thousands of kids and families flock to these things, but I cannot help thinking of the destitute and homeless.

Hi Rod222 I agree, Melbourne spent 2.5 million on fireworks, what a waste. I think it could have been spent cleaning the dirty streets in Melbourne City, and policing the gangs that are always causing trouble and nights, but Melbourne's "Perfect Mayor" has blinkers on and thinks it was a good use of public money. Here in Montreal there was fireworks as usual to celebrate New Year. If Rod like others think that fireworks are a waste of money, Montreal is surely to be blame first as we have every year The International Fireworks Festival. It last all summer and every Saturday night there is a different country participating. Last summer Australia won the bronze. In the beginning I found that exciting but now I lost interest in it. |

Here, in Barcelona, people go to private parties or to discos. No special public event is held; although a lot of young people (many foreigners) seems to concentrate on Catalunya square (the main Barcelona one) to drink and to go crazy. The main city's expense on January 1st is on police to control drunk youngsters and cleansing after the celebrations. We've fireworks on September 24th and, despite the crisis, nobody objects. |

Nothing here. My town isn't into nice, happy things for everyone in town to enjoy. Instead, they do one or two events that only benefit the shop owners, or sports stuff at the schools. I am suprised they actually have Christmas lights in the Center... }:-{ |

My wife and I also spent the night in - had to, we were both ill We generally stay home on New Year's Eve anyway. Apart from that, I heard that there were fireworks at the falls in town here. I did see some of the fireworks at Sydney on tv though - quite impressive. Chimo Bujutsu |
