According to Linn's Stamp News (Jan 16 Issue), the USPS plans to issue a commemorative forever stamp in early 2012 honoring Danny Thomas, television and radio star and founder of the St. Jude Children Research Hospital. Make Room For Daddy in your stamp album!

Interesting that I just did a "Google Search" about it and came up with this, however, when I clicked on the link, I was given a very rude "access denied" response. Sounds like the USPS has a new issue of USA Philatelic in the wings but not ready for release just yet:

Sounds like it's been in the works to the CSAC for awhile:

Interesting that January 6, 2012 will have marked his 100th birthday.

With only a few days til its release, you'd think they'd have a far better sense of organization. Can't believe that it's the 100th anniversary of Thomas' birthday. He always looked so young on TV. Then again, he was of the black and white era of broadcast. Good choice by the advisory board, not just an entertainer, but an extraordinary philantropist and gentleman.

Third paragraph of this news item suggests that at this "Gala" on January 7, 2012, the USPS will be making a presentation -- probably the stamp unveiling (?):

Bet it will be the second in the new Distinguished American series. Danny Thomas isn't being honored with a stamp for his contributions to entertainment.

Verso Text: Danny Thomas (1912-1991) was the consummate entertainer.

As a young boy, he mastered the dialects and mannerisms of the immigrant communities in which he grew up, developing a unique gift for storytelling. After making several feature films, he starred in Make Room for Daddy, a popular television comedy that aired from 1953 to 1964. Later, Thomas produced such successful television shows as The Andy Griffith Show, The Dick Van Dyke Show, and The Mod Squad.

Thomas became an icon in American comedy, but behind all the jokes and anecdotes he told to sold-out crowds in Las Vegas, Miami, New York, and Chicago, there was a serious humanitarian. In 1962, in gratitude for prayers answered, Thomas opened St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. Located in Memphis, Tennessee, the hospital treats children with catastrophic diseases regardless of race, religion, or a family's ability to pay. Since its founding, St. Jude has helped dramatically increase childhood cancer survival rates across America and around the world.

Throughout his career, Thomas received a wide range of honors, from a 1953 Emmy Award to a Congressional Gold Medal in 1985, but St. Jude was his most important accomplishment. "No child," he insisted, "should die in the dawn of life."

An interesting stamp and very good likeness - much better than that proposed Jose Ferrer stamp. I thought for sure that it would be in that new Distinguished American format, but it's much closer to the Legends of Hollywood type. Now I'm curious about the selvage! Anybody know anything about the lapel pin that Danny's wearing on his tux? Maybe something about St. Jude or of his Lebanese heritage? Overall a good rendering of his facial appearance during the time of "Make Room For Daddy."

Maybe something more will be mentioned about it tonight. Remember, the St. Jude Gala is supposed to be held then, with a star-studded audience and a "special presentation" from the US Postal Service. I'm sure the news media will pick up on it in more detail then.

[edit] I just noticed on Wiki (and for that matter in the description of the stamp noted in this thread) that President Ronald Reagan presented Danny Thomas with a Congressional Gold Medal for his work with St. Jude's Children's Hospital. Maybe the gold medal on his lapel is indication of that honor.[/s]

I was waiting for the first news report to announce the Danny Thomas Stamp and here it is, courtesy of USA Today:

http://www.usatoday.com/news/nation...1?csp=34news

By the way, I was mistaken in the question raised previously as to the meaning of the lapel button Danny Thomas is wearing in the stamp. The news article refers to it as follows:

Quote:
...a lapel pin representing the St. Jude Police League, which supports Chicago police officers.

Now that's one I never would have guessed!

[edit] For more information on the St. Jude connection to the Chicago Police Dept. and the history behind how Danny Thomas became involved, check out this link:

Just picked up a sheetlet of these stamps today. The reverse has the following text:

For those interested in such things there is also "USPS" microprinting on the stamp, however, in this case the microprinting isn't incorporated into the portrait but is shown under the second "N" in "DANNY" as highlighted here:

I can't say much for the "spray-on" cancel, but at least I got my "unofficial" first day cover in the mail today:

wt1,

With as many trips as you seem to make to the post office you should ask to have your unofficial covers hand cancelled to avoid receiving those disappointing spray-on postmarks.
