The Jamaican "St Dunstans" for the war blinded, I would expect, as the red cross, to raise funds. CV Unknown. The "St Dunstans" effort was, in a large part the result of the generosity of an American, with the devotion of others to assist the war blinded http://www.st-dunstans.org.uk/about...history.htmlNew Trainees In February 1915 two blinded soldiers moved into 6 Bayswater Hill in London, a property lent by Mrs Lewis Hall a generous benefactor. This was called the Blinded Soldiers and Sailors Hostel and was only temporary whilst the new training centre was being modified. An American Banker, Otto Kahn lent his residence St Dunstan's Lodge to Arthur Pearson for the duration of the war. This was spacious and the grounds extended over twelve acres. On 26 March 1915, sixteen blinded soldiers and sailors moved in to embark upon a revolutionary rehabilitation and training programme. The aim was to enable the majority to return to as normal a life as was possible and earn a living. St Dunstaners could choose to train in massage (physiotherapy), shorthand typing, telephone operating, poultry farming, carpentry, basket and mat making, boot and shoe repairing. Braille was also taught which enabled the individual to read and write. Some struggled to master the six dot permutation of Louis Braille's ingenious but intricate system of reading by fingertips. Sport was a key part of rehabilitation and they enjoyed rowing, swimming, competing in walking races, goal shooting and tandem cycling. St Dunstaners formed their own band and dancing was a popular diversion. |

Charlee van Diemen- informations found Quote: 1 gr. lilac and black 2 gr. yellow and black 3 gr. red and black 4 gr. green and black 6 gr. blue and black 8 gr. red and black
ATTENTION: many forgeries exist of this issue (6 forgeries and 2 bogus issues)! The stamps were used in 1863-1864. Many genuine stamps had a security overprint with 'Ch. v. D.' and a '1' below the 'v' surrounded by dots (this overprint has also been forged by the way). The cancellation consists of a circle of 16 mm diameter without any text. The original stamps are very rare and most of the stamps found in collections are forgeries. Reprints exist of the values '6' and '8'.
The originals can be recognized as follows: The 'H' of 'HAMBURG' is open at the bottom. The 'B' is small, with a very small upper part. There is a dot behind 'HAMBURG' quite far away from the 'G'. The 'S' of 'CHARLES' is normal. Between 'Brief' and 'Packet' there is a ','. The perforation is 11 1/2 (very roughly perforated). The 't' of 'Packet' is situated on top of the first 'i' of 'Expedition'. The first 'i' of 'Expedition' is nearer to the 't' than to the 'd'. There is a stop behind the word 'Expedition'. The '&' is situated more over the 'x' than over the 'p' of the word 'Expedition'.
...and read more here, at the bottom of page: http://catalogue.klaseboer.com/vol1...hamboten.htmnothing found about value, listed some on ebay, what I saw were bw. 7-10$, ex: http://www.ebay.com/itm/GERMANY-LOC...190433668282 |

Canadian Perfin Nabha.....I may be looking in the wrong place, or the catalogue is leading me a merry dance [with the eyes]. Could be a forgery I suppose? Charkhari...these are cute but I have no idea....... Sure I'll find loads more before my job is done. Oodles of thanks. Londonbus1... .....where are those matchsticks ? |

Rod, I just saw this comment of yours early in this thread: Quote: My dream is to Digitalise all my Australian Stamp Magazines, I have $2000 put aside for a decent scanner, but it's hard to get good advice, I keep putting it off. In what format are the magazines? (looseleaf, stapled, bound, etc.) And what paper size are they? I recently digitized all my issues of philatelic society publications ( Germania, Vorläufer, German Postal Specialist, etc.) so I could have them in searchable PDFs that I could carry on my iPad. I can offer assistance or advice as needed. |

Londonbus, bad news on the Indian States: they're all fakes. The Nabha is a new one on me. I've never before seen such an atrocious forgery of a Convention States overprint. You're quite right: the 1 Anna 3 Pies stamp never was overprinted 'NABHA' - in fact, no George V stamps were overprinted that way. Some of the George VI stamps were, but the overprint was quite different: The first of the Charkhari stamps is a silly forgery: the 1 Anna was never issued in purple. The closest it got was a rather uncommon indigo. The vast majority were printed in blue-green shades: and as only a single die was used for the printing, all genuine 1 Annas should look like this one. The other Charkhari are also silly forgeries. The genuine ½ Anna stamps were never issued in those colours, or with those types of cancellations. This is what the genuine types look like: and this is what a genuine postal cancellation of the period looked like: (although here being used to CTO) |

Tony, many thanks for the help once again. I did have my suspicions about the Charkhari also. There is a load of India-related stamps here so I may need to ring your bell again before the collection is sorted ! Thanks again. Londonbus1 |
