I've seen this referred to several times, and once on the "Is this #71 reperfed?" thread, so I thought I'd start a new topic, with a link to this great website:

http://www.americanstampcollection.com/tools/

You'll find the Dynamic Stamp Viewer, which has several tools, one of them being the Srail test, where you can see if the left side perfs of a stamp match the right side, and top vs. bottom.

The website is owned by a collector, John Hart-- I've never had the pleasure of meeting him, or corresponding with him, but have referred to this site on many occasions.

Hope this is helpful, Thanks, Ray

All,

I recognize this is a very old post but I retained it for the link to the dynamic stamp viewer from John Hart above. It seems this web page has been removed or maybe moved. Does anyone have knowledge of what may have happened. I did find this link very helpful. Thanks in advance for any information.

I noticed the site went down about 4 months ago. If desired, I would be more than happy to host this nice tool on the Stamp Smarter site. Does anyone know how to get in touch with John Hart?

Disi,

Thanks for checking on this. I noticed this as well but was not sure if it was moved or maybe my browser was not working properly. I also pulled up an archived version of of John's home page but the links to the "tool" tab did not work as this was not archived.

Don, I was also trying to find a link to Johns' contact info but the link to his contact data also failed me. I suspect John spent a good deal of time to get that set up and it would be unfortunate to loose it. Thanks for your offer to host/replicate if we can get the details. Hopefully we get lucky and someone can help provide more details.

I posted three weeks ago that this website could not be accessed and inquired about alternative ways to invoke this test but not a single person replied to my post so I assumed that no one was interested in this topic anymore. Nice to see that someone has enough interest to try to help out on this.

Part of the site is archived by the way back machine, but unfortunately the /tools page is not. Maybe someone can find an archived copy somewhere else:

The image below is from a PowerPoint presentation "How to Spot Fakes on the Internet". I presented it in 2006 at the APS Summer Seminar and at the APS StampShow and AmeriStamp Expo as well as WSP shows in Denver and Seattle. Since then the presentation grew into part of the Stamp Marketplace course at Summer Seminar and then into the Fundamentals of Expertizing course presented last year at Summer Seminar. A repeat presentation will be scheduled for the 2015 APS Summer Seminar. Bill Weiss, Irv Miller and I are the presenters.

I have attempted to contact the original site owner, Mr. John Hart, about restoring that site or parts of it, and will let you know if anything comes of that. I did not get an immediate bounce notice, so hope springs eternal.

Ah, bummer! The attempt to contact Mr. Hart took me to another collector with that name, who does volunteer work on stamp shows, but who was not connected with the website.

So, it's back to square one.

Does anybody have any news yet on the www.americanstampcollection.com website since it had very good stamp examining tools on it? Another related website was www.onlinestampalbum.com
