I was about to leave the stamp show today but my wife was still snooping around so I took a last look and found this 19th century cover to Venice and then re directed to Vienna...i tried to fight against it..but no use..it was too close to my maternal heritage..somewhere between Venice and Vienna...i will show a pic of the backside also !!

"Thomas Cook" is a world-famous travel agency founded in the U.K. in 1841. Even in the 19th Century, it had offices all over the world, and wherever you traveled, the office nearest your destination would hold your mail for you, and forward when necessary. Now 170 years later, it is still a highly-regarded firm with a sterling reputation.

As Doug mentioned they were world wide and they were the agent for overseas bookings. They would also issue tour guide material that is highly collectible.

In this case, the addressee would have picked up her mail at the Thomas Cook office in Venice. However, when she left the city, she had the Thomas Cook people forward any mail that came in to their office in Vienna.

Another company that did this type of service was Baring Bros, which functioned for hundreds of years before being brought down by a rogue commodities trader.

I'm surprised no one has yet commented on the reference in the upper left of the cover that reads:

per"Aug.-Victoria".

The reference is to the Ship the Augusta Victoria (later renamed Auguste Victoria), which is pictured on the following postcard:
