I have also observed that stamp collectors are usually big fans of SF novels. Is this the case with the Community members? What do you read when you are not Philatelising?

Sorry, not a Sci-fi fan. Unless you count being a Trekkie Like to read pretty much anything apart from science fiction or fantasy. In terms of favourite authors I am a big Steinbeck fan. (relating to the music thread, I'm also a Springsteen fan, which is like Steinbeck but set to music ). I like reading legal/crime type thrillers, and also real life travel and adventure type stuff, Into the Wild, Touching the Void, right back to John Muir's travels and Grey Owl. |

I dont read Sci-fi either. I'm mainly an 'adventure-thriller' type reader...Jack Higgins, Lee Child, Tom Clancy etc with a bit of Robert Jordan fantasy stuff thrown in.
I also read a lot of fiction/non fiction relating to WW2. |

Science Fiction is my guilty pleasure reading. I generally prefer history, railroading (mostly motive power and railfan photography), occasionally politics, and religion/theology. Reading tends to reflect current interests, which can sometimes be intense. My to-do list includes trying to read more of the classics. |

I am a big Science Fiction fan from way back. Fantasy and Swords and Sorcery also. Wikipedia list of Hugo winners: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hugo_A...r_Best_Novel Quote: The Hugo Awards are given every year by the World Science Fiction Society for the best science fiction or fantasy works and achievements of the previous year. Years ago it seemed to be separate from regular fiction but now it seems that there are science fiction novels that are mostly nowadays stories and who says it's science fiction anyways nowadays? Just wait a year and it's real life. There is some great writing in a lot of fiction, of all genre's. |

I am a Sci-Fi reader, I especially enjoy the older stuff from the likes of Isaac Asimov, Robert Silberberg, etc. I also like techno-thrillers from Rollins, Cussler, etc. and Alternate history books. Stampgal, Star Trek counts, last I looked it was Sci-Fi ! |

Loath Science fiction. Surprised no one else mentioned my favorite, Historical Fiction. Would have thought that stamp collectors were big into it (although I see that some wrote History) |

Quote: Loath Science fiction I'm with you 100% on that one, Joe. I'd rather have a tooth pulled than watch a sci/fi movie. Historical fiction is my favorite type of reading material, too. I don't pick a book by its cover, I go for total page numbers. The ones with at least 800 pages are my favorite. |

I *used* to read a lot more SF, but do faithfully catch most SF movies. I'm very partial to apocalyptic movies such as Book of Eli.
Now I'm mostly doing historical fiction (Erik Larson for example) and science biographies. Just picked up a book on Isambard Brunel, great engineer! |

Thank you all, For your interesting comments. One thing does come out of it for certain, stamp collectors 'read'. I do not see it as the dieing pastime that the media would have us believe. |

I love science fiction. A long time ago (in this galaxy), I picked up "The Penultimate Truth" by Philip K Dick because I liked the cover, and then read nothing but PKD for about 2 years. Favourite writers are now Frederik Pohl, Arthur C Clarke, Larry Niven, Isaac Asimov. I also read Peter F Hamilton and John Scalzi. I like apocalyptic fiction too - Pookie64, I am currently reading "The Passage" by Justin Cronin, I can recommend it. The only connection with my stamp collection is that I have Scott #4143. |

I read a lot of sci-fi, but over the last 10 years or so, I have balanced it out with more mainstream fiction, since I realized I was missing out on a lot of really good fiction.
In the sci-fi/fantasy genre, I am a big fan of Terry Brooks, Stephen Donaldson and Isaac Asimov. I've also become a huge fan of Michael Crichton as of late. A lot of his books are really sci-fi for the masses. |

At one time I was a big time reader of science fiction, and still dabble with it. My main reading interest is history, particularly late 19th and early 20th century Europe, with a great interest in WWI. |

No reason we can't all be friends. Science fiction is the historical fiction of the future. The world needs both Unfortunately it's not always going to need stamps. It's philately, Jim, but not as we know it. |
