I don't know firsthand that there are primers in the hobby, but as soon as I say this, someone will correct me. I, personally, would suggest picking an area of interest and then subscribing to one of the philatelic press publications (Scott, Linns, etc.)(a lot of libraries have these). After you have decided which way to go, the you could always go to the public library in your town or if blessed a university library and read up on the finer points of your interest. Once you have become somewhat knowledgeable there are many privite stamp rganizations (clubs) that publish very fine journals on various subjects that the group takes a special interest in.

Stamp catalogs are good ways to educated yourself, again when you decide which way to go with your collecting interests.

Meanwhile, there is a good base of knowledge on this group that can assist you or normal questions pertaining to items.

Hopefully, even though this is somewhat abbrebviated, you can get some ideas as to what you would like to do.

Good luck, and just remember that as a hobby, stamps can be rewarding and educational if you make it that way.

Thanks ProStat4evR, I have seen the huge amount of knowledge on this forum and appreciate each bit I read and absorb. I have with further reading found 2 books on this forum that look promising to me namely Washington Franklins 1908-1921 by Martin Armstrong and Stamp Collecting for Dummies, both seem to offer some of the desired information that will set me on a correct course for many years of collecting. My eyes have been a steady color of red from reading so much on this great forum.
