Scott's Catalogs. Available at most public libraries or can be purchased.

Research online also but the Scott's catalog is king when it comes to United States stamps. Nice "Prexies" you have there also.

For a while, the USPS had a small catalog you could get in book stores. It had Scott numbers, and was really inexpensive. Not a bad starter reference. It may still be available.

Certainly it's still available! Most larger post offices should have one available for $20. If not, you can order it from SFS at this link:

I have one and use it daily. It's good for most US stamps, just not as detailed when getting into varieties, etc. The images are good, it's much easier to thumb through, and the catalog values match that of the Scott catalog, which at times can be a good thing, as you don't have to go through a lot of listings to find the catalog numbers you want.

It's also got a great index. (Hint: I take the index pages out of the spiral binding and scan it into a searchable PDF file on my computer's hard drive. I can then "search" the listings for any name or event depicted on a postage stamp and get the catalog number instantly.)

To avoid having to pay for catalogs, you can go to the Mystic Stamp catalog website.
They have an online catalog where you can locate your stamps - they give the Scott #s.
They don't list all the subtle varieties of some stamps, just the main Scott # in most cases.

This is just one more option of many ways.

Libraries usually have Scott catalogs too.
