This explains the short-lived encased postage .. I had never heard of it till a couple years ago when I saw one at an ebay auction and wondered about it.
Actually seen one on pawn stars with a 3 cent washington 65 . When the expert came along he said that the vast majority were dispossed of as they were no longer accepted and depending on the company the values can be really high. The one on the show had an auction estimate of 3-5000. Likely the $750 or so paid on ebay was a good buy.
Nice to see some items still achieve well above catalog value. I have to disagree with the sellers description of extra fine as it is clearly well off center high.
