I thought I'd show this one-- pretty cover, dated December 1861, so the date is correct for the rose pink issue. I just love any cover dated 1861-- because there's always a chance it could be one of the pink's. It is a "ladies cover". Very small size envelope, a little bigger than 2 1/2" by 4 1/2". It has a neat slogan embossed on it that says "What Stronger Breastplate Than a Heart Untainted". The stamp is a really pretty rose pink-- my 2nd one on cover now, and I bought both of them from Mike McClung, who I've mentioned several times before is the leading expert on the color variations of the 3c 1861 stamp. No need for me to send this one for a cert-- if Mike says it's rose pink, it is pretty much rose pink. Take care-- Ray

A bit off the subject, but the stamp is upside down. I recently bought some Canadian covers of the same era, and some of the stamps were also upside down. It seems an occurrence much more common then than today? Anyone have reasons for this? oh, NICE cover Ray |

I have heard you mention him before. I should check out his wares soon. Check out rijo on ebay as he has a number of those from time to time. |

Sometimes just a mistake, BUT ... placing the stamp upside down also meant "Mailed with Love" or swak (sealed with a kiss). Same as drawing hearts on the envelope. |

Ray,
Your a lucky man, I believe I saw that one and was about to place a bid on it and then got called aside. Then I forgot about it! It seems to me that you must have several dozen of those pinks by now, so when are you going to put some on sale? I still have an empty spot in my album. But must admit that I have a couple on cover. ;)

Bee See-- On some P.O.W. mail during the Civil War, a stamp would be placed upside-down to show that the prisoner was under duress...... I only wish I had one of those covers! Thanks, Ray P.S., Art-- you snooze, you lose! I don't know why I keep buying these rose-pinks. I guess if I end up with enough of them, I keep hoping that one of them will end up not being rose pink, but pink, or even better, carmine pink or lavender pink! Hope all is going well for you..... That is an excellent point Ray and one that some of us less experienced collectors can benefit from. Buying from a reputable source like Mike will almost always pay for itself in the long run. Even if it costs $50 more as you'd pay that and probably more getting one you won on an ebay auction certified, especially when it's from some dealer you know nothing about and their 300dpi scan . |

Ray,
Are you going to the Winter Stamp Show this weekend in Atlanta? its at the Mansour center. I'm going to try and make it on Sunday if I can. Hope to see you, and any other SCF member, there.

Ray: You going to Aripex while you're there? Quite an impressive set of exhibits will be on view there this weekend. |
