The best reference is Julius Bochmann's Katalog der deutschen Gelegenheitsstempel (Sonder- und Werbestempel) von 1865-1951. [Catalog of German Occasion Cancels (Special- and Promotional Cancels, 1865-1951]. It's 18 small booklet volumes, about 900 pages, arranged alphabetically by city. It's still available around the Internet for $150-$300.
