I don't know about others methods of purchasing covers at shows...we went to a show at the New Yorker Hotel this past year and the first dealer in the door had a huge dollar box of worldwide covers...i pulled some great Argentina antarctic and registered covers for a buck..gave him his 6 or 7 dollars wondering if I should have purchased more...then I saw his "cataloged cover" trays...i looked at Argentina and he had very similar covers to the ones I took for around 7 dollars each...i guess its not worth his time to fish through the dollar box and catalog the better ones !

I have found some real gems in the dollar box. Many times the dealer will take less than a dollar apiece. If I find 10 covers I really like, I'll have $8 in hand and ask if he/she will take $8 for the ten covers. Ninety-nine percent of the time they will say yes.
The best time to bargain is just before the show ends. Most dealers will really deal then. I have gotten really nice dollar box covers in bulk for as cheap as 10 cents a cover.

In my eyes it is better to buy at the beginning of such an event, than at the end, because the best pieces in such a box will not stay long there!

I agree and that is one reason why I also hit the boxes early. The point I am trying to make is that many dealers are willing to consider an offer, even early in a show. After over 50 years of attending stamp shows, though, I have found that a dealer tends to be more receptive to an offer towards the end of a show than the beginning.
If I am turned down on an offer and willing to pay what the dealer wants for them, then I will buy them. If I really want the items I do not wait to see if they are still available later.
