Just received this little gem today along with a couple others and when I put in the glassine the white paper really stuck out compared to the other 2 from same era. Reprints state stiff white paper crackly gum of which there is no gum but the paper makes me wonder. Also is the wondering of green ink outside the image common? Direct scans at 600dpi no enhancement or alterations.

Very nice indeed. I wonder if someone gave it a peroxide bath to clean it up? Regardless, beautifully centered. Congrats.

Definatly no more peroxide from this end- Did my experiment with the couple s queens and noted as such in my collection. This came from a higher end seller but he rarely ever has US.

It is a nice stamp. I am not much help, but I think only around 450 were issued. I believe this would be number of sheets as the plates were of 100 images and would be strange to have the 50 extra, but I could be wrong. Maybe that could be the number that has been found in singles.

And supposedly one can tell by the shades of the stamps which are the reissues. But you would need a verified copy of the other issue to compare to this one.

I have two or three stamps from the same era with the same type of paper as yours above and have never decided what they are versus originals or reissues.

The odds of reprints of any of the classics is pretty low. Doing the flick test with this it is not hard paper but I wonder if some were released with no gum? That is about the only way I can see absolutely no discoloration of the paper.

There's another possibility. If this stamp was "soaked off" with modern issues with phosphor tagging of some kind, that chemical can migrate into every stamp in soaking bowl and affect the color and appearance. If you have a (short-wave) ultraviolet light, check to see if it fluoresces.

They issued the reprints from a new plate of 100 subjects. I do not believe that there was a straight edge (which resulted when they cut the sheet of 200 into 2 panes of 100) on the reprint plates. You should also look at the stamp under a black light to see if there is a manuscript cancellation that was bleached out.
