Need To Know The Value Of Some Stamps...

Hi y'all, I have a ton of stamps from my great grandpas massive stamp collection and I would like to know how much they are worth... If you can, please state the amount for each pic (if you know how much its worth today). Sorry for the glare, the camera can't focus well on the covers.

I typed in, "Paul Laurence Dunbar Stamp" into my IE browser and came up with this from Mystic Stamp

Mint Stamp(s) $0.55
Used Stamp(s) $0.15
Mint Plate Block $7.00
Mint Sheet $26.50 (it looks like you have a sheet)

I typed in "Sidney Lanier Stamp" in my IE browser and came up with this

Mint Plate Block $4.00 (you have a plate block)

If you do the same, you should readily find out the general value of the stamps you posted.

Well, you'll find the actual value of your stamps, if you go to a dealer a ask him/her. I'm afraid, you'll be somewhat disappointed... Even if they were on pristine condition (which is not the case), you'll get only a fraction of the catalog value. Stamps are a tricky legacy.

Some of your stamps show foxing/rust, which destroys plentiful/common stamps value and desirability.

The causes of foxing are not well understood. One theory is that foxing is caused by a fungal growth on the paper.

Another theory is that foxing is caused by the effect on certain papers of the oxidation of iron, copper, or other substances in the pulp or rag from which the paper was made.

It is possible that multiple factors are involved - high humidity contributes to foxing.

Is there anything you can do about rust?

Not on a Mint never hinged stamp. A hot soapy bath might help rust out but there goes the gum, so make sure to keep it away from the rest as it spreads. Your stamps are good for face value as postage and not too much more. The plate blocks help it on the collectors end but for those years they literally are a dime a dozen.

Mumut, yes BUT only for a limited time regarding Mint stamps. As you would appreciate canvasing those methods on Forums is destructive for long term collector(buyer) and the stamp trade.

Rejuvenate stamps Auctioned/Sold off look perfect but eventually the new owner see's the onset of rust/foxing 'to his surprise'.

Your stamps are mint, yes, but they are common. And the market is glutted with modern US postage.

Either use it as postage for yourself or you can try to sell it. Dealers will give you between 50-60% of face value. retail ( ebay) sold as mint postage you may get up to 90% of face value.

This topic comes up almost daily here. Stamps used to be considered an investment and millions of people would buy plate blocks of all the new issues and hoard these for years just waiting for the right time to sell these treasures for a handsome profit, well that time never came with the exception of the dealers that jumped on the plate block bandwagon and were proclaiming what a great investment these plate blocks were.

Most mint US stamps printed from the late 30's and on can be purchased for 50% to 80& of face value, plate blocks, Zip blocks, slogan blocks etc... included. Do not rely on internet dealer prices to determine the value of your common stamps, like Mystic, they have on average the highest retail prices in the universe. Your stamps would be for the most part be considered scrap postage. I am not saying that you may not be able to sell one or two plate blocks for 50 cents to the right guy.... No sugar coating here, it is what it is. Good luck.

But here before to give to children to be played with marks has decided to specify, whether they though what have that value or let play?
