Thanks khj.

I also took a look at my own example of the block. The gold color looks like a pre-blended color on there, and as you have indicated it was applied by two separate plates, as indicated by the two gold plate numbers.

But looking at images online ( ebay), I saw something else I can't explain. One decent online image shows what appears to be two applications of the gold, each a little off from the other as far as registration - the result being a brighter yellow sticking out beyond the edge of the second application. That, and looking at the gold vs the yellow rectangles along the border of a pane of the stamps, I don't see an exact match. Without an actual example in hand, though, it's difficult to be sure.

[EDIT AND CORRECTION: I made a mistake, looking at plate blocks online and thinking there was brown blended ink color (seeing a brown digit in the plate number). I was wrong - after finding better images, the color and number was orange.]

I'd still be very curious what color(s) can be seen in an extremely magnified view of the border areas of that lovely block.

I also looked for a fold-over printing error of that issue, although the printing sequence and the timing of a fold happening might make that error of limited use.

Calling the block a changeling probably caused by the sun just does not feel right.

Again, thanks!

I thought I would add my example and some closeups. There are some color shifts, but not enough to affect the discussion.

The Plate Block and Upper Right show (2) slightly different yellow (gold?) bands along the outside border.

Does this help to resolve the question? (I think not.)

But I'm surprised that the yellow would be faded so significantly and yet the orange and red appear to be so completely unscathed -- that to me, usually only happens with chemically altered stamps. I think all the sun-faded stamps I've examined, the reds and greens and blues were also affected to a lesser extent.

Not all colors will fade at the same rate and yellow is know to fade faster. Also, the other colors in the stamp in the original post are indeed somewhat faded compared to the normal stamp.

Khj,

You might try a quartz-iodide (halogen) light bulb. When Q-I bulbs first came out, one of the first places they were used was in theatre lighting. (The size of the light fixtures and follow-spots shrunk dramatically as the Q-I bulbs didn't need to get rid of heat in the same fashion as normal incandescent bulbs.) However, as a result of the change to Q-I bulbs, the stage makeup had to change - all the actors on stage were getting sunburns, so they had to develop UV-blocking makeup. Regular glass blocks something like 90 - 95% of UV light, but quartz glass lets it all go through.

Hi

Last September, I resubmitted my block of 4 Carousel stamps to APEX along with all the posting comments by members of Stamp Community.

Today, Jan 2, 2016, I received them back from APEX. They again ruled the stamps were bleached and not under inked. (see images)

Therefore I will accept their ruling.

Thanks for the help
