I mentioned several months ago that I have taken over the "Stamp Collector's Corner" at the Oregon Stamp Society. Every 4th Saturday of the month, members show up at the clubhouse with items to sell or trade. At the end of the day, the club receives 10% of your sales, up to a maximum of $15.

Perhaps it's the spring weather, but the past two months have been phenomenal. Not only are members showing up with their wares, but there has been an increase in non-members visiting.

This past Saturday brought in at least a dozen people "off the street" having no association with the club. They either read my advert on Craigslist, or stopped because of the "Stamp Show" sign in front of the clubhouse. The most promising sign of things to come, was the appearance of a number of high school girls who dropped by of their own volition (at the risk of sounding like a creeper). I don't remember the last time I saw kids over the age of 12 participating in a stamp club/show.

On a selfish note, I brought my over-stock of Germany stamps to the event for the first time, and they sold like hotcakes. I made $360 selling at 1/3 catalogue on items I spent 5%-10% on.

I feel re-invigorated!

Brian

Rileysan, it is great to hear that your efforts have increased the interest in stamp collecting in the Oregon area. I wish that my club could get some youths interested in the hobby.
Regards
Mike

Gettin' the word out, good goin' Rileysan!

I wonder if the girls thought the show was about stamping as in crafts and rubber stamps? But, then again, I know a nurse who said they went to the stamp store (when there was still one) and enjoyed buying stamps and displaying them.

Nope! They had a genuine interest in postage stamps. My hope is that years down the road, they can look back with fondness at their first stamp event and say that the Oregon Stamp Society started a life-long love of philately.
