I think modern hinges are terrible, but.... if you are careful you can usually avoid atamp damage. When you remove a stamp from the album, leave the hinge remnant on the stamp - ie take the stamp and hingle off at the same time. Any stamp over 40$ I keep in the bank anyway so the potential loss is limited.
