The first major auction of the new fall season just concluded - with
stunning results - Spink Shreves Galleries sale of the
"Westchester" Collection of Spectacular Quality United States Mint Stamps.
Numbering only 174 lots - with a total Scott catalog value of $179,048.00 -
these select stamps were sold over a span of two hours this evening and the
total realizations (including buyer's premium) were in excess of
$1,610,000.00!

WOW 60K for a 4c Colombian . I am sure most if not all are graded stamps but that is still amazing.

stamp dealers were using mint Columbians for scrap postage up into the twenties.

I normally Don't pay much attention to what stamps re worth but would'nt it be grand to find a treasure in a boxlot.

I'm gettting the ebay itch again someone stop me quick.

Maybe this will shed some light on the 4 cent Colombian issue: I was reading in "Rare Stamps" written by L.N. and M. Williams published in 1967. The 4 cent Colombian was normally printed in ultramarine, but a few copies have been found in deep blue the color of the 1 cent. Whether this is a true error of color or a color trial issued by mistake is unknown. Both used and unused copies exist. The book states the in unused condition they are specially valuable. I wonder if the stamp that went for 60k plus may have been one of the stamps with the deep blue color

Now that stamps are being expertized by TPG services, they are commanding higher prices like coins have been...get on board and enjoy the ride!!
