I have a Scott Specialized British Commonwealth album that has pages damage from tape adhesive. The adhesive is from auction sheets from the '50s that were stuck between the pages waiting for mounting the stamps. The damage has been there since I got the album some years ago but I haven't wanted to do anything about it for fear I'd do more harm than good. I'm hoping our SCF experts may have some ideas on whether I should try to repair the damage and how I should go about it.

There are several pages like this:

There are also some damaged stamps.

There are quite a few of these auction sheets.

Should I do something or should I leave it alone?

First get the stamps of the sheets.Trash the auction pages save the stamps that did not get "yeelered".The album pages are done, I guess if you were very frugal you could put glassine page protectors in between.

I would throw them or use them as charcoal starter for your grille. The stains would send me into OCD convulsions if I had to look at em in my albums. The upside is that the tape did not damage the binder. You will do more harm than good by not doing anything.

I don't think you can easily remove those stains. Years ago, I remember reading a booklet about "Restoring" postage stamps. The process for removing tape stains involved organic chemistry equipment (a reflux setup) and crazy solvents. It seemed pretty expensive and reckless if you didnt happen to have a chemistry lab handy.

Fred,
As there's not an easy way to repair the pages, I think I'll make my own pages to replace the damaged ones. Do you see any reason why the undamaged pages might still have unseen residue that would warrant replacing the entire album?

Peter,
As it happens I do have a chemistry lab available to me but that seems a bit extreme unless I find something really valuable! The only stamp-related activity I've conducted in the lab is using their nice microscope to look at some flyspecks.

Seeing as the stamps are damaged anyway I think I may as well try soapy water and maybe dilute bleach solution. Too bad for the MNH ones but they're not M anymore anyway.

Thank you both for your suggestions!

Karen
