The question still to be answered is whether or not the third character in the town name is really an over-inked "u" that gives the appearance of an "n" or if it could possibly be a previously undocumented inverted "u".
Wt1 I am going to throw out my opinion. Since there is obvious space at the bottom of the letter in question,I think it it an "n" and not a "u" at all, therefore misspelling Southbridge.
I showed this to the PSS state editor for MASS, Mike Gutman and he was sure it is a Stockbridge. Mike knows more about MA precancels than anybody else alive. He was unsure about the inverted-u question, saying that the impression was too messy to tell for sure. Maybe inverted, maybe a random blob of ink. Since no others have been reported, more likely a blob. This precancel device had 25 subjects, 5x5 - so if it is a constant error, at least 4% of the stamps would show it. Thanks again for posting - it is a very interesting cancel.
Thanks for the additional information. Certainly a curiosity even if it doesn't rate any premium in monetary value. An interesting example of an otherwise dull precancel.
