Sorry I already goofed by putting this message under another new member's introduction...sorry for that...see below..


I am a new member and am starting to sort out my German stamps. I am only interested in pre 1940 stamps. Since my catalogue list different numbers for the same stamp design according to different water marks, it seems to me a daunting task to check each stamp for its watermark. Any advice, do collectors just ignore watermarks, or do they just bite the bullet and check each stamp? Your advice can be very helpful, thank you.

Welcome to SCF greatest stamp site going. You got it right, you probably want to bite the bullet and check them. Sometimes the difference in watermrk can mean a great difference in value. But there is no hurry - enjoy what you are doing. Watermark a few, then do something else with you stamps. You will get them figured out. Again - WELCOME - Jeff

I just look at watermarks when I have to. I think as you do more and more of them over time you will get used to it and become more poficient at it.

I am not sure of Germany but some watermarks can be recognized without using fluid, or just wetting with water (for used only).

I think scanning the watermark (with fluid) and then using the scan to compare to a catalogue is a good idea as otherwise you have to remember hat you've seen when you look at the catalogue and try to find the correct one. Maybe not always but how does one tell a sideways watermarks or upside down quickly? Experience I think.
