All one needs nowadays are good computer skills - - - - and no stamps / philatelic skills.
In the days before computers, a philatelist had to write or phone a bonafide auction house to be put on their list to receive the different auction catalogues. Today, if you have the computer skills, all you have to do is start up your own website and sell, or better still, list everything you have on
ebay etc.
I lost count of the many times I have seen junk stamps listed as 'rare' stamps etc. To a non collector, if it's old, it's rare and expensive. We all know this is so untrue.
Like I stated earlier,
ebay is a glorified flea market. Had
ebay started up before the computer, they would have had to have a specialty of some sort. For example, either stamps, coins, rocks, antiques - - whatever, and issue a specialized auction catalogue. Today, with the computer, they can list everything literally under the sun and thet do NOT have to be knowledgeable on any given subject. All they have to do is accept anyone who has a moth eaten cover, card and put it up on
ebay for a fee.
Granted, some people know what they are selling and the prices are usually adjusted accordingly.
On the plus side for any of these online auction houses, including
ebay, we have images at our finger tips for any given lot to examine. Also, to be honest, there are bargains to be had out there too. If you are on at the right time, it is possible to get a real bargain, but, you have to know what you are looking for.
Enough of my ranting
