Strait Settlements Stamps.

This are some of the straits settlements in my collection. Probably you guys may have seen better ones,but just posting it for viewing and to reach my 50 post.


This one is a red embossed fiscal cancel of $3 on a $1

Never seen the embossed type cancels on these or was that some sort of overprint or revenue usage. Interesting even though not my area.

It is fiscal cancel for revenue. This fiscal cancels were used mostly in the high courts in Singapore and Malaya during that era.Normaly the embosed amount is as per the stamp value but dont know how this one stamp was embossed above the stamp value.

Selva, thanks for sharing these scans and identifying that embossed cancels apply to fiscal usage. I only have a few dozen Straits Settlements stamps in my British Commonwealth collection but look forward to getting more including a possible embossed cancel.

This is pretty neat. I've never seen one of these before.
But I notice the embossed cancel is for $3 on top of the $1 stamp. So they seem to have added extra value with the cancel. Could these been used as a method of surcharge rather than just a cancel?

Jamesw,it is not a method of surcharge. What I have heard or read is that when you need to stamp a document in a government dept during that era in Malaya and Singapore, you needed to stick stamps on the documents as per the fixed value required and fiscal cancel was done on the stamp and documents as well. In this case I thik the court registrar or the government dept personel had over looked the value of stamp and proceeded to cancel it over the stamp value. Another example below 50c stamp cancelled as fifty.
