So the listing indicates despite having the top row of perfs removed its not a bad looking SCOTT #20 that was obviously misidentified. I haven't received it yet so this image is not mine. The catalog difference is a $40.00 stamp vs a $240.00 stamp.

My 2011 Scott catalog shows the #24 at $40 used; the #20 at $275 used, so the variance is even wider than you noted. However, without top perfs, the value would be diminished from those prices.

nice get art. Love those older pieces, even though they are a terror to identify!

For me, Scott number 5-9 and 18-24 are the most trying. That's why I love them. I must have a couple dozen 24s, a dozen 20s and a few 22s that just sitting in my stock book. I'm trying to get at least one from each plate of the 1 cent Franklins. If it weren't for the perfs I'd really be up a creek.

Nice grab Art! You know this already I'm sure but stamps of that era were sometimes removed from the sheets by scissors despite being perforated. It's very commonplace to find the early US classics in that condition so if I find them and the price is right I'll usually at least put it in my watch list. I believe the straight and/or cut edges are tolerated to some extent on the older ones. Congrats it's a nice find in my humble opinion!

Another bargain courtesy of our friend Miss I.D. Probably a dealer following the classification system perfed = 24, imperf = 9.

Art, I see that your investment in the Ashbrook books is starting to pay off already-- I was also fortunate to find a #20 at the Nashville show in March mis-ID'd as a 24. Not in best of shape, but for the $12 I paid for it, it was still a bargain......

Congrats-- Ray

Ray,

Are you going to the Spring Stamp Show in Atlanta next week (19-20)? Not many dealers but I usually find something of interest. In May, I found a registered cover from August Dietz using the bottom row of #630 and a couple other stamps. It was a nice find from one of our "Pioneer".

Nice find, those blue Franklin's are tough to ID. Have you ever found a 5 or 5a ?

Andy,

Not yet, but I'm still looking. What a find that would be! In order to find one, the stamp would have to be cut out showing the complete top & bottom. That in itself would be hard to find.
