#212 With Columbus Ohio Markings

I thought this was sort of interesting- I received a #212 in a small lot and noticed that one had what almost resembles a precancel, but most likely some type of box cancel or the like? Any ideas on what this could be? Thank you very much for taking a look. -Jeff

I think it's Columbus, Ohio. Not necessarily a box cancel, though.

Back in that day, many post offices had a stamp with the city/state name on it and it was often used to cancel stamps on letters and parcels, etc., which I think is what we're looking at in this case.

Edit: (The basic trick in detecting a precancel is that the city/state name typically would not extend beyond the size of the stamp; obviously, in this case it does, so you can eliminate the idea of it having been a precancel.)

Thank you wt1. I knew it wasn't a precancel but I never ran across a cancel like this one before. I think it's really interesting none-the-less! Thanks for the pointer on precancels too.
