Thanks everyone for the help with my last post on my father-in-laws stamp books. Now I am wondering what do I do with all the duplicate stamps that I keep finding? Also, I doubt that I have oodles of money in Harry's stamps, but should I be cataloging them somehow for insurance purposes? How do you prove what you own??

Hello and
When you start you better treat all the stamps like they are valuable.
If you have access to a library most of them have the Scott catalogues. Check for some values. But better to know is if your father-in-laws spend allot of money on his stamps They are very old stamps that are near minimal value. For insurance, buy a dog . Seriously if you have pictures or scans of the stamps we can help you more. Daniel

The best way, imo, is to create a photographic inventory of everything and store it on thumb drives in multiple locations (one at the office, a secure place in your home, etc). For insurance, most homeowners policies require a rider with a specific $$ amount. But in all honesty, it not worth the time or expense for the majority of collectors.

I'm certain you will find MANY opinions on this topic, so give this thread a few days before deciding what to do.

I guess once I get to know the stamps better I could digitally keep a record of the stamps that do have some value, and not bother recording the rest. As for what to do with duplicate stamps, it is the boxes of used stamps that are still on paper that I don't know what to do with. If I already have a stamp in the album, I don't need more copies (unless it is of some value), but I can't toss all the others...I don't have that many unused stamps that are duplicate, but some.

There is more than one way. My dealer is doing evaluation for insurance company. It can save allot of scanning time. But I don't pretend I use either way.
