Congratulations, LB1. Haven't purchased anything from you, but tracked your progress dealing with the forces of evil. As one who has gone through a somewhat similar situation, I believe it is incomprehensible for those who haven't been dragged through such a drill to imagine how violated it feels to deal with the invisible and uncaring minions of such web companies.

Just to briefly share my experiences with paypal over the last year. They froze our account containing over $23,000 for 180 days. We took them to court but they paid out a week before the hearing less $863. They do this routinely because they know it's no longer worth your while paying lawyers to chase after small amounts. We had to make 2 staff redundant as a result. Never got any kind of explanation or apology.
My lawyer says Paypal is appearing as the defendant in court lists all across Western Europe. The following article is also informative:
http://www.ecommercebytes.com/C/blo...6417579.html
My biggest concern is - where are they holding all these funds? How can they get away with freezing hundreds of millions of dollars and paying no interest? This feels like a massive scandal. A lot of people are very unhappy about this company. Surely the regulators will be moving in soon.

docgreene, fascinating article and even more so the comments below it. I'm afraid that Paypal are going the way of any big business and this holds true of Google as well as ebay in that over time, any business with a monopoly position will behave monopolistically. I'm afraid there's nothing that can be done to prevent this and as their positions become more entrenched then the worse their behaviour becomes but always dressed up as benefiting 'customers'.

Sadly this will only end one way and that is with the regulators stepping in.

Yes, in general your observations are correct. It's a shame because Paypal was a really decent company to deal with up until about 4 years ago. I believe they took on a lot of risk in paying out sellers promptly. Now they've swung the other way and are just horrible. They are ebay's most profitable venture and there are shareholders to answer to.
This last couple of years in particular, I have gained extensive insight into how they operate - from the dodgy Luxembourg domicile - I actually got through on the phone to the Luxembourg Finance minister's office! Believe me, there is absolutely no oversight from their regulator. They have no clue. Paypal's first line of defence in our claim was that the court had no jurisdiction over a Luxembourg company but this argument always fails.
And then the lies just keep coming. They claim that they are not a bank and only deal with e-money which is not placed on deposit. They claimed that if only we had replied to their automated emails our account would have been restored within 72 hours. They claimed that they had information of suspicious activity on our account...
Their lawyers will swear any number of false statements and when you catch them out they revert to "Paypal is a huge company and we are given information from many different departments..."
There are lots of other skeletons waiting to come out of Paypal's closet. I've just scratched the surface. I think there could be a snowball effect once the first regulator makes a move. Similar to the Microsoft antitrust cases in the US and Europe, or indeed the European Court v ebay cases.
My advice to anyone would be not to leave large amounts in a Paypal account and to use other payment services wherever possible.

doc and jon,
allpay.net,
interac,
checkfree,
hyperwallet,
nochex,
paymate,
firepay,
neteller,
and many more provide an alternative to paypal.
Unlike ebay, it does not matter how many use it. So have you not thought of switching? If you have, which do 'you' recommend?

Unlike ebay [their other corrupt company]

The comments, arguments, and articles about Paypal are interesting and compelling. I certainly understand why people are beating up on Paypal.

However, I don't understand why you think ebay is corrupt.

ebay spent years trying to root out fraudulent sellers with only moderate success. It has been because of the changes in selling policies that most fraudulent listings have been eliminated. Sure, it's a pain in the rear for sellers. And yes, it's more expensive to sell. But as a buyer, I no longer fear being an ebay victim. The same can't be said for *ahem* other auction sites.

If protecting buyers is corrupt, I welcome the corruption ...

Don't worry about it. This is a forum, opinions are what it is all about.

Right or wrong, most of us offer evidence to back up our opinions, and if you're trying to get someone in a twist, tell them "don't worry about it". It smacks of trolling ...

I agree I have been using paypal (for my business) for over 10 years.
I keep two accounts open in the same bank. One account is tied to Paypal and the other is NOT. As soon as a transaction takes place, I move the money to the non-paypal bank account.
My bank fully understands that Paypal pulls these retrievals of funds BUT when the money is not there they cannot get it back.

Just my 2cents worth!

I like selling and buying on ebay, I have a paypal account that I use.
I have tried to sell on other sites but went back to ebay,I have tried alternatives to paypal but went back to paypal.
Why? because I want the most traffic to my auctions, I like paypal because I find it easy to manage.
Also my customers feel safe and secure with making purchases over ebay and are comfortable paying funds with paypal.
As a buyer I like the purchase protection ebay offers if I make a purchase with paypal so I know I feel safe.
Sorry folks but they world of stamp collecting that you knew 30 years ago is gone, brick and mortar stamp stores are just about gone.
Any time of the day I can shop for stamps visit dealers stores, drop into the online stamp club when ever I wish and do all this in my boxers and coffee stain t-shirt.
Which online auction is better is like saying which brick and mortar store is better.
I have bought sold and trade stamps and never meet a person face to face. the only interaction is online sites.
I have had a couple of bad experiences with paypal in the past but it was sorted out with one phone call.
Yes ebay costs money and paypal has fee's but news for you nothing is free in this world.

I'm happy to assist you. First, an introduction to the search engine "Google".

www.google.com

Using the words " ebay Fraud team", Google turns up more articles on ebay's fraud prevention team than I could read in a lifetime.

In addition to ebay's fraud prevention team, private groups have assisted ebay in identifying fraud. In the case of Stamp collectors, "Stamp Collectors Against Dodgy Sellers" (SCADS) worked with ebay to filter out the bad apples.
