I bought an old post card from around 1908 from my home town of Jersey Shore, Pa. and it's a street view of S. Main St. and most interestingly a hotel that is long gone. It's absolutely beautiful to me and I used to live on this street way down beside that big church steeple in the background which is of the Presbyterian church. it is a familiar view for me but most of the buildings are gone from 2 large fires and from 2 floods. The 1936 flood and the 1972 flood. Anyway, I thought you may be interested to see it.

Nice postcard. The hotel shown in the picture was said to be the largest in the area. I also enjoyed reading of how the town got its name:

Quote:
Jersey Shore was originally named Waynesburg by the two brothers, Reuben and Jeremiah Manning, who laid out the town circa 1785. Around the time that this was happening, a settlement arose on the eastern side of the West Branch Susquehanna River (Nippenose Township), opposite Waynesburg. A rivalry developed between the two settlements, and those on the eastern shore began referring to the settlement on the western shore as the "Jersey Shore," because the Manning family had relocated from New Jersey. The nickname became so fixed that in 1826 the original name of Waynesburg was officially abandoned and changed to Jersey Shore.

It is always nice to see an old postcard or image from your home town. Amazing to see all the changes from the past.

Thank you! I really enjoy seeing that stuff and I was always into our town's history. In fact I have a book on the history of Jersey Shore Pa. and there is a load of information about all the different Post Offices and Post Masters and and lots of great pictures! I found the Office that card would have passed through and even pictures of the carriers so I even know what the fellow looks like and his name that delivered it! Cool huh? I'll scan if if I can. I know Mr. Welshans (the Author) He was a "local" and teacher in the High School) and he's great about letting people reproduce stuff as long as it's in the pursuit of history. and most of these images are in the historical society museum anyway.
