Quote: Eric Use the search engine if you need help on sorting. It's been discuss here many times I believe.
philb Yes I have! - In fact, and I can't remember who posted this, but a great idea I saw was using 3-ring sheet protectors in a binder to sort them into by country... I bought 200 of them (the heavier plastic ones) and I am going to try that method... My US stuff (about 8,000 stamps) I sorted using plastic zip-lock bags and I sorted by denomination. But my box of bags got unwieldy... (I have since gone through them, mounted the ones I needed, and put all of my dups into stock-pages) |

I think you got a great bargain Eric. Those stamps will take you some time to sort through too <G>. I know how you feel because in 2010 I bought 2 plastic medium sized bins loaded with loose stamps right to the top. It was estimated that there were 250,000 stamps in them! I am still sorting to some degree and finding good stamps worth $10.00 and up. Might be another year before I get them sorted the way I want them. Chimo Bujutsu |

Actually, what had happened was that I was first given the offer to buy any stamps at 2 cents apiece. I ended up getting so many out that I lost count and told the owner this and he said he had the same problem when he first bought it too. So we settled on a weight and agreed from there. When I went to the meeting to pay him (this was all done by email back and forth) he asked me if I would be willing to take the whole lot simply because he didn't have enough room in his truck to take them back.
So, the original arrangement was $250.00 and he asked if another $100.00 for everything would be ok. I jumped at the offer and never looked back. So, the total was $350.00 - plastic bins thrown in as well lol
Without exxaggerating, there has to be at least eight or nine thousand stamp with a CV of $0.75 to $10.00 and another several hundred from there to as high as $55.00 apiece!
There are countless stamps available for trade from this buy too.
Still sorting but close to being finished.

Hi Rocky, There's another site I use to judge bidding by and it's here http://www.goofbay.com/. There is a handy free tool (amongst all the others - play with them they're great!) called ebay Most Popular Tool (under ebay tools) where you put in the item number and it will tell you how many people are actually watching the item you want. If there's lots you know you are going to be in a bidding war, if there's few or none you can put in a lower bid. It helps me decide whether I want to enter the fray and if so how much it's likely to cost me. As my old dad used to day, the value of an item is not what it's worth but what you can get for it. Finally got a few minutes this morning to start going through some of this stuff... Found this set of QEII Coronation Stamps... Not sure if it's complete, but I'm sure it's pretty close... |

Wow, that is a great lot! Even if you don't find any real expensive stamps in there, just the fun of the months (or years!) of sorting should be worth it! I like getting box lots of stamps from ebay, but unfortunately they usually go for more than I can afford, even if it doesn't look like there's anything valuable in there. |

A short update - Haven't had a lot of time to sort, but I got through maybe 2500 stamps in one of the bags. Out of that I ended up with 198 counties/issuing entities.. Thought that was pretty good. Pretty heavy in GB and Commonwealth.
A quick look at the other boxes leads me to believe I have a pretty great mix.

Little more sorting last night - Up to 205 different countries... I have only gone through 3000 stamps - With 57,000 to go, I wonder what I'll end up with.... Kinda fun really
