i have a scott # 1735 with a horizontal and vertical perf error. I've never seen this before and I was wondering if anyone might have some knowledge about this

There is a known 1735a (imperforate pair) and 1735b (vertical pair, imperforate horizontally) for that issue, with a italicized Scott Catalog value of $80 and $600. The reason for the italicized listings is that they are considered quite scarce and few transactions involving that stamp have been recorded. Once again, a scan or picture of the stamp would be helpful in order to determine if this is one of the actual items you are referring to.

An example of a 1735a imperforate pair is shown at this link (note their sale price is $55 v. the $80 catalog value for the item):
