Fantastic history behind the 4th Regiment in Shanghai. Here is a similar one (On piece, not cover) of the Marine detachment at the American legation quarters in Peking.

They were known as the China Marines and are on of the most fabled Military outfits in American history.
Great story here.

The Sand pebbles is about the USS San Pablo which similar to the HMS Sandpiper were both Gun boats that patrolled the Yangtze river during the 1920's to the 1940's during the Revolution. Another movie which is more directly related to the China Marines is 55 days at Peking which centers on the Boxer rebellion. Dowager Empress Tzu-Hsi used the Boxer secret societies to attack the foreigners within China, culminating in the siege of the foreign legations' compounds in Peking (now Beijing). The film concentrates on the defense of the legations from the point of view of the foreign powers, and the title refers to the length of the defense by the colonial powers of the legations district of Peking.

I have many China/USMC covers and they really are not that difficult to find. I have some really beautiful covers that were printed in China that the Marine ordered for himself. I'll have to post a few later. As a sidenote: My dad was a China Marine serving there from 1945 to 1949. I wish I had his letters.
