@ tstraz I arrange my stamps in stock albums using the following self-made rules which have worked for me so far.
1. All stamps are organized by existing/modern countries
2. If a country allows its provinces/states/emirates to create their own stamps, it will only be sorted under the official country name (eg. Abu Dhabi, Ajman, Dubai, Fujairah, Ras al-Khaimah, Sharjah and Umm al-Quwain would be categorized as United Arab Emirates)
3. Stamps do not have to be organized chronologically based on catalogue numbers/issue dates; however every effort should be made to ensure that sets are organized together
4. For labelling of stock albums, the names of countries will be in the most recognizable basic form (eg. Democratic Republic of the Congo and Republic of the Congo would be categorized as DR Congo and Congo respectively) unless it is only known by the entire name (eg. Central African Republic would remain as Central African Republic)
5. A dependency or colony which is self-governing is considered a country even if there is a significant association with another country (eg. Isle of Man and Niue)
6. Stock albums are organized alphabetically according to the English name only (eg. Áúëãàðèÿ would be categorized as Bulgaria)
7. Countries and provinces which have amalgamated will only be sorted under their current name (eg. East and West Germany would be categorized as Germany). This is also true for countries which have separated (eg. USSR would be categorized as Russia, Georgia, Ukraine, Moldova, Belarus, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikstan, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania)
8. A split country's former stamps will be included with the new country that has the same capital as the preceding country (eg. Yugoslavia would be categorized as Serbia) or if one of the split countries retains the original name (eg. Sudan would be categorized as Sudan while South Sudan would get a separate album)
9. Countries which have changed names will only be included under the new name (eg. Dahomey would be categorized as Benin)
10. If I have a lot of stamps from a pre-amalgamation, name change, separation country etc. they can have their own stock album but the album will still be labelled under the current existing country name (eg. Hong Kong would be categorized as China)
