Hello! New In Dfw, Texas Area

Hello everyone! I am some what new to the collecting of stamps. I have bought a couple of lots off of ebay and have been collecting current used stamps from people at work. I really like working with the stamps and creating a database for my collection.
I have also gotten some pages from some other sites that have all the US stamps. So far this has been a fun past time for me and my oldest daughter is really getting into it as well, but she just like the stamps from the past 5 years for some reason.

I have seen that there is a number of stock books, pages, and binders out there, but I was wondering about the whole Scott number thing. How do you sort your stamps out once you have the Scott number? Do you write that number on the back of the stamp or do you put the stamp in a piece of paper or cover of some sorts? Reason that I ask, is that I have spot for stamps in the different binders by year and Scott number and location in my database. This makes it easy to search for the number and where the stamp needs to go, but I worry that if I "write" on the stamp, that I will damage them.

Any thoughts on how to better do the process of getting the Scott number with the correct stamp?

I am really glad to hear that you are collecting with your daughter. My son started collecting with me when he was 10. Now he is 26 and we still enjoy the hobby together. With regard to your question, I would never recommend writing directly on a stamp, but you will find many collectors who do. If you choose this route make sure you use a soft pencil and write lightly. This would have little effect on the value of common used stamps.
You mentioned that you are using stockbooks. You could either use paper labels inserted next to each stamp or labels on the pocket in front of the stamp. I might also suggest that since you mentioned that you are keeping a database, you could create a guide to your stamps using excel. One stamp per cell, one page per sheet. This would allow you flexibility to move and add stamps.
How old is your daughter? Many of the younger collectors I know are drawn to either topical or foreign stamps.

Thank! My daughter is 11 and so far she like a little bit of everything, but says that for her going back just 5 years would be something that she can handle. I didn't argue with her, because if that is what she wants to do, then I think that as long as she is involved with collecting, that is all that matters.

What I have created was the sheets that were on stamps.org website. Which I didn't know was going to turn into a lot of volumns. Well I have added the Scott number to each slot from those pages. In the database that I created, I have the Scott number, volumn number and page number. So when I enter some verbige of the stamp, the database searches it out and when it finds what I am looking for, I know where I need to go.
The next step is to add images for each Scott number stamp I have in that database...

Wow, that's quite an ambitious undertaking. Good luck and do everything you can to keep your daughter involved. You might want to check out local stamp clubs or visit a stamp show. They are also listed on the stamp.org website.
