I found this beautiful strip of 4, Scott# 723, folded up inside a book! What you cant see in these pictures are the creases these little guys endured from some one carelessly man handling them.
Their loss, my gain, but they will never recover from the abuse they went through.

This is a great example of #723/late use of June 3rd, 1940 and almost perfect centering..

It might have been cancelled at a dpo, if that makes a difference. When I saw the title, I thought it would be another thread about markers used as cancellation devices. At least they didnt stick it to the cover with tape, that would be worse.

Thanks Puzzler! I never thought of it that way, but the black cancel does compliment the stamp.

new12collector,

lol, The abuse wasn't that extreme. I was just shocked to see it crumpled up in a book.

New12collector,

I Tried locating the PO in Virgina, but I haven't been able to confirm if it's closed down. I'll keep looking.

It seems to me the postmark is most likely North Holston, VA, a post office in Smyth County that was in operation from 1907 (when it was renamed from Plasterburg) to when it was discontinued on November 30, 1959 (at which time mail was redirected to Saltville, VA).
