Help With US Scott 2542. Is It An Error, Altered Or Faded?

The below image is my copy of the US 2542 $14 Eagle. As you can see the denomination and the Olympic circles are not very visible. I do not know what the error stamp looks like but would you consider this to be an error, altered or faded?

If it is altered, would you say it's now worthless as whoever had it before me probably tried to convert it to the error stamp?

If that's a self-adhesive stamp (I don't know), my guess would be that someone used a too-powerful solvent to try to get it off the parcel, with the obvious damage resulting.

This particular issue was not self-adhesive. I don't know what you have there, but you might consider sending it in to PSE. They'd give you an opinion on this stamp for $10. It might be worth that just to know.
