I could use some advise on my U349 Pan Amrican Expo Cover.

The first question would be the date, Why does one cancel have January 3rd, 1900 and the cancel over Scott# 268 say, Pan American 1901.

Second question may be a little dumb but, In Scott Specialized this Entire list for $40 with machine duplex expo cancel. Not including the U.S. Scott# 268. I understand Scott cat. values are retail unless there is something unique or special about an item. With this in mind, Does the late use of U349, added Scott# 268 and foreign use add to the value?

If there are other comments for questions I did't pose in this post I urge them.

and it's on a Columbian Expo postal envelope! Sort of cool but I have never seen that cancellation before?

The 40$ catalog valuation is for the envelope with the COLUMBIAN exhibition cancel. This is a pre-fair advertizing cancel for the Buffalo exhibition. Advertizing cancels are sometimes used for years before the actual [in this case - 1901] opening of the events. The Buffalo cancel is collectable but not particuarly scarce.

Pan American 1901 is part of the cancel to promote the upcoming exposition in Buffalo. I don't have any clue as to extra value.

I am admittedly a neophyte but I have never seen a Barry machine cancel with a slogan before. Without the slogan, it would be a common machine cancel.

This site shows several examples of Barry machine cancels with the 1901 Pan American Exposition slogan included. The problem is that they are identified in the styles of BO1-13 and BO1-14, with several sub-letter varieties and I don't know enough to tell them apart.

Here's a timely article from The Stamp Insider back in 2010 that explains why it is important to carefully research these covers before applying a value to it:

As previously stated, the 1901 date is part of the killer and the date of processing in inside the oval dial. I believe that you example is a Bomar B01-14, a B01-14A is shown below for your reference.

The reference in Scots about the exposition cancels are, of course, for the Columbian Exposition World's fair Station post office

An example of the machine cancel is shown below (Bomar C93-11A)

The duplex cancel is shown below (Bomar C93-02)

I hope this helps.

I really appreciate every one's help with this one. You really educated me in what to keep my eyes open for and how to research better. I never linked the date on the entire with the Colombian expo let alone the Barry machine cancel. Wow, here I was focused on the Pan American expo.

It really is an interesting cover considering the combination of factors.
1- Late use of U349 in combination with #268
2-Berry Machine Cancel
3-Foreign use

I guess my next step will be to research what EKU & LKU the Berry Machine cancel was used to promote the Pan Am Expo.

In the end, I paid $9.00 for it 2-years ago on ebay, Couldn't be happier to have it.
