Today's USPS "Stamp of Approval" blog references the final series of the Flags of our Nation stamps issued today, with the final paragraph containing the following quote:

Quote:
Although today marks the end of a stamp series, a new series will begin later this week! We'll have more details on Saturday.

It sounds like we may be in for a major announcement on a series of new issues this coming Saturday.

Here's a link to the reference:

We haven't had a good definitive series since the Transportations and Great Americans.

And we still haven't...

In my book, the Americana series of the 1970s was the last great definitive series.

But, I can't blame USPS for trying.

For me it was the Liberty series as far as truly "great" definitives, though the Americana series was certainly not chopped liver.

Edit:

This reminds me, I never see the Americana series on cover.

That's why so many collectors focus on commems only.

The USPS Facebook announcement was rather a disappointment for most stamp collectors, who knew already that the USS Constitution Stamp issued today would be the first in a series of the War of 1812 stamps. That was their "big announcement" ... false hype to the non-collector who knew about the series for quite awhile now. The exact quote from USPS Facebook reads:

Quote:
Today we are very excited to introduce a brand-new series of stamps commemorating the bicentennial of the War of 1812. The first stamp in the series honors USS Constitution, or "Old Ironsides."

I think to the best of my knowledge the War of 1812 has been prety much ignored by the USPS. This could be a very interesting series.

Nick is right. There has been very little War of 1812 coverage and most of it has been related to individuals who gained fame in the war (i.e., Commodore Perry, Stephen Decatur and Thomas MacDonough, Francis Scott Key), the USS Constitution, and Fort McHenry.

I think this was the only stamp issued to commemorate a battle in the war:

Well, the war of 1812 is unknown of to most of the (young anyway) populous. I am going into 7 th grade next year, I bet you your house that if I or the teacher asks about the war 1812 most of my classmates will say "huh? We had a war then?". It just seems to be overlooked. Well, that's my 2˘...
