I'm sure I found a rotary waste stamp Scott#545

I have a picture of three suspects in my collection for comparison.

The stamp on the left is Scott#498, The middle stamp is my perpetrator Scott#545 and the stamp at the far right is a #498. I wanted to use multiple #498's to compare with the perp.

See line up

After applying vertical & horizontal slice of both outsides stamps they are clearly not as wide as the suspect stamp but slightly taller then the suspect stamp. The rules out #544 making this a #545 rotary wast stamp.

Or am I completely wrong?

Not completely wrong, but sometimes stamps from booklet panes are a little wider.... which is what I think you have - not a SC545.

Booklet pane! I wasn't thinking about that, I should've with the straight edge to the left. Dope!

Thanks.

Chasa, You're saying sometimes booklets are wider. Are they sometimes taller and sometimes wider or always wider? And, about what frequency (percentage) would you estimate that to be? I've some probably 499's that are taller and some that are wider that the frequently stated 18.5-19x22mm for flat plates. I've two 19x22.5mm perfed. 11x11 (no straight edges) I'm told are 499--I'm guessing because of less water content in the paper therefore less shrinkage(?), and four 19.5x22mm, perfed. 11x11 all with a straight edge, 2 of which have center lines and a portion of the adjoining stamp to the left of the center line, that I'm told are from booklet panes. I'm wondering, if all, or most, booklet panes are taller or wider than 18.5-19x22mm, why Scott doesn't make mention of it--or did I miss it being stated somewhere in the catalogue?

One thing to remember on the 545/546 stamps, along with 595 on the next Bureau series, are that they are notoriously centered badly, because they were so wide.

Harder to tell on a screen but the rotary 1c greens, at least to me, tend to be lighter, and the flat plates tend to be darker. This stamp just looks more like a flat plate stamp to me...I may be way off though.

Here are from my collection, a 424, 545, 546.
The 545 looks different than the flat plate 424, and there's barely enough room for the image on the stamp on the 545.

Can't give you a good reason for the measurements earlier, but thought I'd chime in. It really looks more like a flat plate stamp to me. I've been wrong before, lots of times! :)

Ray

I'll need to make a scan of the back and post it.

I see what you are saying about color too. A big difference in comparison to mine.

Ray's scan also shows the color difference between the flat and rotary printings. His 424 is a medium green which is still darker than any of the rotary printings. Additionally the flat palte has a much sharper image while the rotary looks slightly fuzzy.
