It's a 3˘ Washington of 1861-1868 series.

This one is tricky without seeing the back. There are variations that depend on the size of the grill on the back. IF there is a grill, you should measure its dimensions.

Also what color is it?

You can find more details and all the variations at 1847usa site (no link, not enough posts :( ).

I see no evidence of a grill on front or back - and the color is pretty true to the scan. Brownish vs rose or pink (see corners of stamp). OK - I'll go out on a limb - I keep thinking Scott #104.

The colour looks pretty oxidized to me. Don't think they came out in brown.

This is a 65 that has oxidized (or sulphurized) some, resulting in a color change.

The color has be changed perhap by chemicals. The area borded in light blue is much closer to the original color. The cancels are partially washed out and some of the original cancel bars are bordered in yellow.

billsbargainstamps at ebay has a 104 w/certificate for sale. The picture posted shows a very different shade of brown red then yours. Of course it's very hard to tell with two different scanners whether I'm seeing what either looks like.

Does anyone think I should do the peroxide trick to bring back the color?

Eiether way you have a couple dollar stamp so peroxide won't hurt as an experiment. However I've done it a few times to small queens and once your done you just have a plain ole 65 instead of a unique oxidized one. As with my experiments it was interesting but in hind sight I would have rather kept the almost black one as a good example of oxidation . If you do do it try it in short intervals like 60-90 secs and do a scan each time.
