It's a color error. 233 is ultramarine and 233a is blue, which can be in one of two shades. Ultramarine is a light blue so the error would look darker in color. Without a color gauge, you can compare your stamp against a known blue stamp and a known ultramarine stamp per Scott descriptions to help point the way.

I believe the error was caused by printing the stamp in the blue colour of the 1 cent Columbian.

Harry, the color error was just part of the description in the Scott Standard Postage Stamp Catalogue and the Scott Specialized Catalogue Of United States Stamps & Covers. I'm not that much into U.S. stamps that I can recommend another source.

A normal 4c Columbian has a Scott Catalog Value of $87.50 if hinged, $225.00 for never hinged. These prices are for stamps in very fine condition. Most stamps do not make very fine.

The blue color error catalogs $16,000 hinged and $32,000 never hinged. The same condition comments apply.

Hi Harry,
My judgement is that the ebay stamp (shown on the right) is ultramarine.
Most 19th century stamps show variations in shade and this is just a bit darker shade but still ultramarine.

Just my opinion, judging from the picture.
As you know colors are not always true in digital pictures.
It would be best to have it in hand.
