Could this be a repair of the L-1 HS device? The town measurement matches that ot the catalogue picture. The "G" is more like the L-2 HS than the L-1 HS example.

A Fake - quoted from the 'fakes' catalog:
This has been described as a counterfeit of the 605, 577 and possibly the 471. Obviously the 605 has a wider VA while the 471 has taller, narrower letters between lines. This has to be a counterfeit of the 577.
The genuine has thicker, even bars that are closer together. Petersburg is shorter and VA has no period.
This has to be one of the more prolific counterfeits, in any sense. Fifield had in his notes 20 stamps and 92 or so photocopies. Many copies are postcanceled or damaged (or both).

Chas, what info can you give me about a fakes catalogue? Title, author, etc. I'd like to have such a thing, but I've never seen one before.

Ryan - here is the info from the author's introduction, Bill might respomd to emails, maybe not.
I understand if you print the thing it takes 2500 pages. As of 2010, major editing was required:

NOT PRECANCELS
(Stage 6a, Middleton II)

HANDBOOK OF SOME CANCELS, etc., THAT LOOK LIKE
PRECANCELS, BUT AREN'T!

COUNTERFEITS FAKES
SOUVENIRS PERSONALS
SHOWS ADVERTISING
and more than 10,000 POST CANCELS

At last! After 50 or more years, a record of what isn't a precancel!

In color, when I can, with pictures of the genuine type with each counterfeit or deceptive postcancel, when I can.

With verified denominations of counterfeits and fakes, when I can!

Pictures of postcancels looking like a precancel, and a copy proving that it isn't a precancel, when I can!

Pictures of varieties!

IMPORTANT NOTE

This handbook is nearing the end of the pre-publication phase. As the catalog/handbook approaches 2,100 pages with around 21,500 illustrations, all but 600 are in color.
I know that there still must be a number of fakes out there, and I still need illustrations and data on many of the known counterfeits, and postcancels will be a never ending quest, but time is approaching to spread the word.

This is a copy with Stage 6 additions. None of the pages have been copy read! There will be a number of mis-spellings, combinedwords and other errors that are fixed as I go along but I just haven't run across all of them yet. I will not try to copy read the entire handbook until I am ready to "publish". (Sorry about the stupid copy but I have spent 20 minutes trying to get page 1-2 in one column and the next 8 pages in two columns, but $%*#$ does not think that it should be that way. Rather than waste more time on copy that will be eliminated from the "published" version, I am leaving this in as $%*#$ thinks it should be.)

NEW INFO as of 3/6/07
I went through the new PSS T&T Catalog checking the (1) footnotes. If there is not a listing here I have added a note as follows (make believe city):
Poduck
704
734 (1)
Now, what this mean? Quite simply, Podunk 704 has been deleted because it is a fake or postcancel. When I get a scan of the item, I will add it to the catalog.
Podunk 734 still is a listed type, but there also is a counterfeit. Eventually I will get illustrations of both the genuine and the counterfeits.
I have NOT looked for footnote 34 items yet.

BOB (Back-of-Book)
I have not checked out Appendix II except for Edella. I note that Melrose MT may need updating, etc
Appendix III: I have used the data for all states except for CA, CO, IL, MD, one MA, MN, several NJ, NC, one PA, TN, and TX.
I also have to do an overall update for NJ and NY. (2010-2011, in process.)

ADDITIONS
Since the 2008 Convention I have cross referenced the items in the Appendixes throughout the State listings. I have also numbered the Counterfeits and Fakes. There still are a few projects to do but I still need to see more State collections and National collections for listings. The main collection checked for Stage 5 added somewhere close to 300 pages to the handbook. Amazing that so much stuff was available this late in the game.

IMPORTANT
I have not compared the listings here with the listings in the 6th or 7th editions of the T&T Catalog. That will be next. I know that Tylertown MS is now listed as an "L" type. There may be other changes like that, but it will require a detailed comparison of the listings. That is currently about number three on the "to-do" list.
Fred Ingram has done a great job digging out errors of that nature in the copy.
The old Appendix-Shows has been redone into four separate appendixes; Covers, Precancels, PSS, and Meetings.
There may be some Appendix-Shows that I missed but the items can be found in the mentioned new files.

INDEX
7/8/10
This index is being added in July 2010 to ease the finding well-known items that cannot be readily found. Obviously a stamp with Rochester, NY will be found in the NY file under Rochester. If it is not listed there a note will direct the user to the correct location. There are items that are in strange places or for which there is no logical file. I will try to list those items here with the file name.

Ryan - here is the info from the author's introduction,

Thanks very much - I'll keep my eyes open for such a thing. Haven't been able to find much on an initial snoop other than an unfinished website at fakecatalog.com, hopefully something will turn up there someday.
