@philb AVG is probably the best software you can get for virus protection. I own a rebar company and we have 34 network links with 4 static IPs, and we are a small company, my computer at work was hit with the HDD virus just mine alone all the other 15 computers were untouched. After much research and several IT companies assessing the system, we set up AVG and HIT MAN PRO, I use them in may home system as well. They scan automatically, (I run a system wide scan every day) and pick up any attempts at access. Since then all systems are running perfectly, and never had any virus, Trojan or other malware penetrate.

But yes you have to be careful. AVG somehow analyses a site when you do a search and advises you accordingly. Very cool software.

If you are running Windows at home, go to the Microsoft site and download Microsoft Security essentials. It is a free download and is a Microsoft product not a 3rd party software and it is as good as it gets for home PC's. The problem with McAfee & Symantec products is that they are resource hogs.

Along with the MS security you can download Advanced system care for free to help with Malware, and system performance. I upgraded to pro and my XP laptop runs awesome. (for an XP machine) You can also go to Iobit.com and download free software to help clean. I saved a few peoples PCs with the free stuff.

I can second Joe Stamps on AVG as being an excellent program. Avast is another and both are free (pro versions available for a price). I only use them on my locally (Guatemala) bought Windows loaded spare computer. My Linux and Mac both don't need any virus, etc programs; they just laugh at anything that gets in the door, if they can even get in, that is.
